 Biography & History

Supaflower Biography

Growing up in the foothills of Fort Collins, Colorado, Supaflower spent his high school days creatively missing school and staying home to play music and build things with electronics. At sixteen, with money he earned from mowing lawns, he had built a fully functional recording studio with a handmade solid-state mixing console, multiple tape machines, microphones, a couple of synthesizers and drum machines, an old acoustic guitar, and the drive to create music.

He archived all of his recordings from that point on, in a life-long art and recording project. These recordings range in style and quality, but provide a unique insight into an artist throughout development. In addition to the music, each release contains unique artwork that has maintained a common theme throughout - the flower.

Being a completely independent artist, Supaflower has freedoms that many of the famous artists of our time don't have. Having no pressure from managers or record company executives, he creates what he wants to in his home studio. He is in the unique position to record and release experimental projects, or long-winded jam session mixes without any fear of commercial failure. What that means for the listener is that there is no compromise with what you hear - it is released as intended by the artist.

If you are just discovering Supaflower, you might want to start with 'Disco Smile' or 'Strawberry Short Circuit' - both of them are collections of some of the more commercial tracks from his vast library of recordings.

Once you dig deeper, you'll find alternate mixes of tracks showing up on EP's and other projects. Deep diving is essential for complete sonic exploration. Some of the experimental highlights include the 'Drum Mashine' series, which is exactly what one would expect: tracks made from solo drum machines, and 'The Seven Tones Of God', which is an ambient journey of long slow-attack synthesizer tones, pads and chords.

The early years were recorded and released on cassette tapes, and with that comes a certain lo-fi charm and character. These recordings represent a time of experimentation with pop, dance, jazz and electronica. You can get a quick taste of these early sounds with the compilation album 'Rocky Mountain Highs', featuring some of the standout tracks from Supaflower's high school years.

Once out of high school, the recording studio grew substantially when he purchased a reel-to-reel multitrack tape machine and professional mixing console from a local studio. Soon after, he began mastering his tracks on digital audio tape, preserving the sonic detail for the future. Highlights of those years include 'Jazberry Jam', an acoustic piano album recorded on a friend's Yamaha G7 grand piano, and 'Typewriter', a dance record made with sequencers, digital synths and sampling.

The newest full length record is called 'Inner Fire For Hire' and contains the breakout hit club classic 'The World Is Spinning Around You' featuring Angela Marie on vocals.

Although there are common elements among the numerous recordings, each Supaflower album is a unique journey. Just barely scratching the surface of electronically based music, the future is bright. What's next, you may ask... Full of surprises, Supaflower has promised to keep the records coming for enlightened listeners decades ahead.
